About Sloan
A desert crossroads with deep roots
Sloan began as a rail siding and quarry town in the early 1900s. Today it's a small, close-knit community balancing steady industrial growth with the open desert that surrounds it.
Our story
Sloan grew up around the rail line that still runs through town today, first as a stop supporting nearby quarrying and ranching operations. Its location — roughly 20 miles south of Las Vegas along what is now Interstate 15 — made it a natural waypoint between the valley and the desert beyond.
That same location is driving Sloan's next chapter. The rail corridor and interstate access that once served small local industry now anchor a growing logistics and distribution district, while the town works to keep pace with the infrastructure, parks, and public services that come with new growth.
At the same time, Sloan sits at the edge of the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area — nearly 48,000 acres of protected desert home to bighorn sheep and one of the region's largest concentrations of Native American petroglyphs. Balancing that landscape with steady development is central to how the town plans for the future.

A couple of things Sloan is famous for
Sloan Schloop
Sloan's signature dish: a thick, smoky green chile and hominy stew, said to trace back to railroad cooks feeding quarry crews after long shifts. The recipe is closely guarded by a handful of local kitchens, and the annual Sloan Days festival always closes with a schloop cook-off.
NASA in the Neighborhood
Sloan's stark, Mars-like terrain hasn't gone unnoticed. A small NASA-affiliated research annex operates on the edge of town, where engineers use the open desert to test rover prototypes and other exploration hardware — one more reason Sloan's geography keeps attracting big projects, on Earth and beyond.
Town Council
